Hours before a “stay at home” order is set to go into effect for our entire state, Gov. Ron DeSantis on Thursday clarified will and will not be allowed for residents. The order will last from 12:01 a.m. Friday through April 30.According to the executive order DeSantis issued Wednesday, “all persons in Florida shall limit their movements and personal interactions outside of their home to only those necessary to obtain or provide essential services or conduct essential activities.”Those “essential activities” include going to the grocery store, gas station, health care facilities, pharmacies, and child care centers, among other venues.“When you’re limiting people to essential services and essential activities, the goal is to reduce contacts with people outside the home,” the governor said during a news conference on Thursday. He added the goal is to avoid having people congregate in large groups, saying, “If you’re engaging in activity that doesn’t involve close contact with other people, you’re gonna be fine.”Additionally, the governor addressed a common concern with the “stay at home” order which allows churches, synagogues, and houses of worship to remain open. Some Floridians worry that will cause groups of people to be together at religious services, thereby spreading the coronavirus.“I don’t think the government has the authority to close a church. I’m certainly not going to do that,” DeSantis said. “There’s no reason why you couldn’t do a church service with people 10 feet apart. So we absolutely asked them to abide by the social distancing guidelines.”DeSantis also announced he is adding more resources to Florida’s Department of Economic Opportunity to handle the large amount of unemployment claims being filed.“This system is not handling the needs of the people in Florida,” he said.To that end, the state will provide extra staffing at the Claims Assistance Center and will purchase additional software to help Florida’s CONNECT website handle more traffic. As we continue to fight the spread of #COVID19, I encourage every Floridian to utilize the resources available below. My administration is focused on providing as much help as possible to the people of Florida. We will get through this together. pic.twitter.com/MEBEqXL0O6— Ron DeSantis (@GovRonDeSantis) April 1, 2020 “This is not something that you can turn on and off in an economy like this,” DeSantis said. “This is a problem that could be with us for more than a couple weeks.”Florida has also suspended foreclosures and evictions for 45 days.According to the latest numbers from the Florida Department of Health, there are more than 8,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the state, including 128 deaths.More than 69,000 people have tested negative for the virus in Florida. Here are the cases for our area:Palm Beach County: 630, and 22 deathsBroward County: 1,346, and 17 deathsMiami-Dade County: 2,448, and 19 deathsMiami-Dade has the highest number of confirmed cases in the state, and Palm Beach County has the most coronavirus-related deaths in Florida. For the latest information about coronavirus cases in Florida, click here.
(REUTERS) – Manchester City crushed West Ham United 5-0 to give manager Pep Guardiola the perfect introduction to the FA Cup as they cruised into the fourth round with a thumping victory at the London Stadium yesterday. After taking the lead through Yaya Toure from the penalty spot, the five-time winners swept their opponents away with devilish attacking verve, inflicting on the beleaguered Hammers their worst ever home defeat in the competition. They survived a solitary scare when the hosts’ Sofiane Feghouli inexplicably shot wide from in front of an open goal, but went in at the break with a 3-0 advantage after an own goal from Havard Nordtveit and an effort from David Silva.Sergio Aguero then flicked the ball home early in the second half to become the third highest scorer in City’s history and defender John Stones netted his first for the club with a header from a corner with seven minutes remaining. If City’s inconsistent form had started to weigh heavy on manager Guardiola, who was in the tetchiest of moods following their Premier League victory over Burnley on Monday, the Spaniard’s spirits would have been lifted by their display in the capital. There were flashes of his former Barcelona side in some of City’s attacking play and the ease with which they dismantled a poor West Ham, who looked off the pace from the start and were thoroughly outclassed throughout a nightmare 90 minutes.Efforts from Pablo Zabaleta and Silva, which were blocked and saved by defender Winston Reid and goalkeeper Adrian respectively, served early notice of City’s intent, but they had to wait 33 minutes to open the scoring from the spot.Zabaleta powered into the box and had his heels clipped by Pedro Obiang, leaving Toure to step up and blast his effort past Adrian.West Ham’s Feghouli, under pressure from Gael Clichy, somehow pulled an effort wide from two metres out with the goal gaping, but that was about as good as it got for the hosts. Two City goals in two minutes before halftime effectively killed the tie with both stemming from flowing passing moves.Nordtveit turned into his own net with Raheem Sterling lurking to double City’s lead, while the England winger then teed up Silva to calmly control and stroke the ball into the net two minutes before the break.Any hope of a second-half resurgence was crushed five minutes after the restart when Aguero got his milestone goal, turning Toure’s shot home from close range for his 154th for the club, one more than Colin Bell. Only Tommy Johnson (166) and Eric Brook (178) have more.Stones rounded off the victory with a header that Mark Noble tried in vain to clear off the line.
London (AFP) – Former England women’s captain Clare Connor is to become the first female president of Marylebone Cricket Club in its 233-year history.Current incumbent Kumar Sangakkara, the first non-British MCC president, nominated Connor via video link from his native Sri Lanka during an annual general meeting on Wednesday.Connor, now the England and Wales Cricket Board’s head of women’s cricket, is set to take up her new post on October 1, 2021, subject to the membership’s approval.Presidents of MCC usually remain in post for one year but Sangakkara’s term is set to be extended by a further 12 months because of the coronavirus pandemic. It was not until 1998 that MCC, which owns Lord’s Cricket Ground, voted to allow women to become members.Prior to that, Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II was one of the few women allowed in the Lord’s pavilion.“I am deeply honoured to be named the next president of MCC,” said Connor in a statement.“Cricket has enriched my life so deeply already, and now it hands me this wonderful privilege.“We often need to look back to see how far we’ve come. I made my first visit to Lord’s as a starry-eyed, cricket-obsessed nine-year-old girl at a time when women were not welcome in the Long Room (of the pavilion).– ‘Times have changed’ –The 43-year-old Connor, now the chair of the International Cricket Council’s women’s cricket committee, added: “Times have changed. Now I find myself entrusted with this remarkable opportunity –- the opportunity to play a part in helping MCC, cricket’s most influential club, to thrive and grow in an even more modern and inclusive future.“MCC does wonderful work for communities in the UK and overseas. It stages the most uplifting events. It brings people together.“And as we take small steps to emerge from this uncertain and difficult time, we are going to need the power of sport and strong sporting organisations like MCC more than ever.”Meanwhile Sangakkara said he was “thrilled” by Connor’s latest cricket appointment, the Sri Lanka great adding: “The club has a significant role to play in cricket’s global appeal and with her influence, I am sure she will make a considerable contribution to MCC.”Left-arm spinner Connor made her England debut aged 19 in 1995 and went on to captain her country in 2000 before retiring six years later.Although MCC no longer runs English cricket, it has worldwide responsibility for the sport’s rules.
