Aodh Ruadh set to finish off great season with clash against Naomh Ultan

first_imgFootballOur seniors and reserves both exited their respective championships at the semi-final stages over the weekend. The seniors lost out to Milford on a scoreline of 2-10 to 0-12, but it took an extra-time penalty save for Milford to ensure their progression. David McGurrin’s initial shot and his attempt from the rebound were both saved with the game pegged at 2-9 to 0-12, but Milford cleared and tagged on an insurance point to end Aodh Ruadh’s participation in the intermediate championship. There were a lot of wides from both sides and Aodh Ruadh will particularly rue some of the goal chances that went a-begging. In contrast, Milford were slightly better at finishing their three pointers and one from Cathal McGettigan helped them reach the half-time break at parity, 1-4 to 0-7. The sides went score for score in the early part of the second half with David Dolan leading the way. However a goal from Pauric Curley gave Milford a margin they were to hold to the finish, despite the best efforts of Peter Gallagher’s men. Meanwhile the reserves made a fight of things in the first half of their clash against Buncrana in the unusual surroundings of St Eunan’s college. They trailed by four points at the break, but looked like they were in with a real chance of grinding out a result. However the Inishowen men went up a gear or two in the second period to run out comfortable 4-15 to 2-9 winnersThe division 3 league campaign is now all that remains to be wrapped up as far as the senior footballers are concerned. It would be nice to finish the season with the title and we can take a step closer to that this Saturday when we are down to take on Naomh Ultan in Dunkineely at 5pm. That game is to be preceded by the reserve game at 3.30pm. The under 13 semi-final pairings have been confirmed. Aodh Ruadh travel to Fintra to take on Killybegs this Saturday with a 12 noon throw-in. Four Masters will play Dungloe on the other side of the draw on Sunday. The under 8 indoor league gets under way this Friday. The teams will be pThe under 8 indoor Gaelic football league commences this Friday in the New Hall at Coláiste Cholmcille and concludes on Friday 14th October. We will be playing from 6pm to 8pm on each night. Because we will be in the hall for two hours each night there will be a charge of €4 per head to cover the cost of the hall. Team lists have been published on the Aodh Ruadh CLG Facebook page. We ask parents / guardians to check through the team lists carefully. If your child isn’t listed, let John Hughes know and he will assign them to a team. If your child is listed and doesn’t intend to participate let him know too, so we can ensure all teams are even strength. Text him on 0876431805 or message him on Facebook The first round of games are used let players get used to the rules of the indoor game and to determine if we need to reallocate players to even the teams out. After that we play a full round of games for league points, with the league being played to a conclusion on Friday 14th October. Medals and trophies presented afterwards to all players. We will need volunteers, parents or guardians to take one of the six teams competing. This will be a very basic job consisting of picking the five starting players and shuttling subs on and off and ensuring every player gets plenty of football on the night. Advance notice of the indoor leagues for the under 10s and under 12s. The under 10 indoor league will be staged in the new hall at Coláiste Cholmcille from 6pm to 8pm on Fridays 21st and 28th October, while the under 12 indoor league will run Fridays 4th and 11th November in the same time slots.Hard luck to Maurice McLaughlin, Liam Mac Laughlin and Philip O’Reilly and Erne Gaels who lost out in the Fermanagh county final by the narrowest of margins, 1-7 to 0-10.HurlingThe under 16s are away to Four Masters in the championship this Thursday. This young squad has done well to field for all games this seaon despite small numbers and a few long term injuries. They will be up against a strong Four Masters team, but knowing the boys they will give it their all.Under 8 and under 10 hurling finished on Sunday last. Both squads did well this year especially the under 8s who were unbeaten all season. Many thanks to the youngsters and their parents for their support all season. Training resumes in March 2017.Ladies The under 16 girls have training this Wednesday at 3pm. Their county semi-final against Urris will take place this Friday or Saturday in Ballyshannon. Final details will be confirmed on the Aodh Ruadh CLG Facebook page.A busy week for the under 13 girls last week. They were in Kinawley last Wednesday to take on a highly rated side in pretty awful conditions. The girls showed up well with all players getting 20 minutes, whether they liked it or not! The defence was excellent with the Fermanagh side scoring infrequently. Tia McFarland was excellent in midfield while Katie O’Brien was exceptional up front and Caoimhe Hughes-O’Brien made a big contribution. Annie Keon was also good up front in the second half. Clodagh O’Connor was in good form as was Danielle Gallagher. There were points up for grabs on Saturday afternoon in Killygordon when they faced Red Hugh’s. Despite the long trip and a delayed throw-in the girls settled well and were quickly out into the lead. Caitlin McGarrigle leading the scoring in the early stages with a penalty goal and a point, she got excellent scoring support from Katie McMullan and Danielle Gallagher. Again the defence, steered by the magnificent Ciara Caldwell, was unforgiving and the hosts had to make do with a return of 1-1. There is training this Wednesday and Friday at 6pm. Players are asked to note change of time. Those sessions are ahead of the last game of the round robin stages which is at home this Saturday against Roberts Emmet’s at 12 noon. Players are to be at dressing rooms for 11.10am.Mental fitness and well-being workshopA mental fitness and well-being workshop for sports clubs is being held at the Central Hotel, Donegal town on Wednesday, 14 October at 7.30pm.
